Prenatal Vitamins: A Quick & Easy Guide to Pregnancy Supplementation

I’ll be honest, I was very inconsistent with prenatal supplementation during my first pregnancy. I just couldn’t grasp why taking a pill everyday, for 9 months was so important, when my body was just going to “make the baby” anyway, right?

Or so I thought…

Now that I’m pregnant with baby #2, prenatal vitamins have become my holy grail! I mean, I haven’t skipped a single day in almost six months! I desperately wanted to be more intentional with my second pregnancy, so I took the time to do the research on what vitamins and minerals were important, and why. Then, I compiled a list of all of my least-favorite pregnancy symptoms, and matched them with the vitamin said to reduce, aid, or support all of my bun-in-the-oven woes.

And voila!

My energy increased, my aches and pains subsided, my blood-pressure levels dropped, and I just felt good, ya know? And because I love you, I’ve chosen to spill the beans on some of my go-to vitamins and supplements during pregnancy. My hope is that you’ll dive into the details, approach it with the seriousness it deserves, and stay committed:

First up, let’s talk about Magnesium Glycinate —the zen master of minerals. You know those moments when you’re craving pickles at 3 AM, and suddenly, it’s an emergency? Magnesium’s got your back. It’s the chill pill you need for those pregnancy-induced muscle cramps, stress, and even constipation. This mineral aids in the development of the baby’s bones, regulates blood sugar levels, and supports the mother’s bone health. It’s a true BFF for the mama-to-be.

Next, we have Collagen, the building block of our skin, hair, and nails – which also plays a vital role in pregnancy. As the body undergoes profound changes, collagen becomes crucial for maintaining skin elasticity and preventing stretch marks. During my first pregnancy, my skin began to stretch once I reached 35+ weeks. And though I embrace my tiger stripes, I’ve learned to value collagen beyond its’ physical benefits. Collagen is a key component of amniotic fluid, and supports the development of your baby’s tissues. So incorporating collagen into your prenatal routine can contribute to the overall well-being of both you and baby.

Vitamin D3 is like a little superhero, ensuring your baby’s bones are sturdy, your mood is leveled, and your immune system is strong enough to endure the outside world. Pregnancy comes with its fair share of emotional rollercoasters, and I love to take Vitamin D3 because it provides a serotonin-boost, so my mood stays beaming and bright 24/7. Vitamin D3 is also instrumental in calcium absorption, it’s that thing that helps foster the development of the baby’s bones and teeth that I mentioned earlier. Beyond its skeletal and immune system benefits, Vitamin D3 ensures that you’re provided with this vital nutrient, given the challenges of obtaining sufficient Vitamin D from natural sunlight.

And for mothers who follow a plant-based lifestyle, ensuring adequate protein intake is paramount. Vegan Pea Protein is stellar in this regard. It’s packed with essential amino acids, and supports the growth and development of the baby’s organs and tissues. Plus, it’s tasty! Its easily digestible nature makes it a gentle option for our often sensitive tummy, reducing the risk of digestive discomfort. I’m a smoothie girl, and absolutely love adding this to my daily smoothies, acai bowls, and nice cream 🙂

It’s important that your prenatal vitamins are packed with the A-listers—like folic acid, iron, and calcium, so don’t rely on just this list for all of your prenatal needs. Always consult with a doctor before deciding to start any supplementation regimen. And if for some reason I just haven’t convinced you enough, if there’s one thing I’ve learned about prenatals, its that they act like a nutrient insurance policy, making sure you’re covered on all fronts, even if you’re currently having a love affair with pickles and ice cream. Oh, and they offer a safety net of nutrients, even on days when keeping down a cracker feels like a heroic feat, if you are plagued with morning sickness.

Congrats on baby number 2! I never skipped a day of taking my prenatals and DHA supplements during both of my pregnancies. Now we’re trying for baby #3 and I’m getting back into it haha. I’m glad there are so many good options out there!

Thank you so much! I was so skeptical of the benefits during my first pregnancy, and now I’m kicking myself knowing how much smoother things would’ve went if I remained consistent LOL. Good luck with baby #3!!! – I’m due with #2 in April and will have two under 2 (Yikes! haha)

I agree! And though there’s not much chatter about it in a doctor’s office setting, it’s still an important part of pregnancy!
