Embracing the Flow of Life and Navigating Change

“Nature compels us all to move through life, we could not remain stationary however much we we wished.”

Charles F. Haanel

I must agree that life by its very nature is in a constant state of flux. The seasons change, relationships evolve, and we ourselves undergo transformations, so it is an undeniable truth that we all must indeed move through life, as time stops for no one. I want you to take a moment to reflect on your own journey. Can you pinpoint times when you resisted change? What were the outcomes? As I reflect on my own path, I realized that some of the most challenging chapters were marked by my instinctive resistance to change. My resistance wasn’t just a passive reaction, it was a misguided attempt to maintain hold unto a false sense of control. Little did I understand that in trying to command this unfolding, pre-ordained narrative, I was also inadvertently delaying the fulfillment of my destiny. There were so many good things and great seasons that immediately followed challenging chapters, that I now believe I could have reached sooner had I not been so resistant to the challenges and change I was being called to for my own personal growth and development – because as we all know, to whom much is given, much is required.

It also took me a while to comprehend that my resistance to change stemmed from a limited perspective. I operated under the misconception that my current reality was a permanent fixture. The concept of forward-thinking eluded me, and this nearsightedness became a breeding ground for continued struggle, as I exacerbated my suffering by resisting God’s attempts at doing a new thing. So, why do we resist change, and why is it futile? To explore this, let’s consider the metaphor of a river. Imagine life as a river, constantly flowing, winding, and changing its course. Now, picture yourself standing in that river. Each change in the river represents a change in your life—whether it’s a new job, a relationship shift, or a personal evolution.

Now, here’s the thing about rivers—they have a powerful force that propels them forward. Trying to resist this force, attempting to stop the river with just your hands, would require you to push against the current with all your might – but in the end, do you actually stop it? Of course not. In this same way, life’s flow is also a force of nature. It moves forward, bringing new experiences, challenges, and opportunities. Attempting to resist life’s changes, is like trying to halt the natural progression of the river with our bare hands—quite the impossible feat. A river will continue to flow, whether we resist it or not. And in the same way, so will life. Resisting change doesn’t stop change from happening, it only makes the journey more strenuous. I think it’s important to understand that change is not synonymous with challenge. Most times, if we simply embrace the flow as a means of navigating the currents more gracefully, we open ourselves up to the wonder of possibilities and opportunities that come with a spiritually lead life.

The Power of Mindful Creation

A study of the creative processes of thought and how to apply them is of supreme importance to each one of us, and that’s because thoughts are the architects of our reality, and our mind is the creative workshop. The thoughts you harbor are like blueprints, illustrating the events that unfold in your life. And though we may understand how positive thoughts can lead to favorable outcomes, and negative thoughts to challenges, what we may have never considered is how our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviors.

Within this intricate dance between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, a constant feedback loop emerges. Our thoughts spark emotions, which, in turn, influence our behaviors. And did you notice what the root word of emotion is? That’s right, “motion”, suggesting that there is a constant flow, movement, or progression occurring, confirming the theme that nature indeed compels us all to move through life.  Our emotions, just like thoughts, are dynamic and ever-changing. They flow and evolve in response to the flux in our thoughts, experiences, and the world around us. Recognizing the connection between thoughts and emotions forces us to also realize that our emotional state is dependent upon and responsive to the ongoing narrative in our minds.

So what’s most important here? Consider this:

If emotions are in constant motion, there is inherent potential for positive change, right? If this is the case, then negative emotions need not be permanent, as they can shift and evolve. Consciously directed thoughts influence the motion of our emotions. So try becoming more aware of your emotional stasis by practicing mindful observation. This means staying in the present moment and allowing intentional thought patterns to positively influence your emotional trajectory. By practicing mindfulness in this way, you’ll begin to develop the ability to observe and understand your emotions as they arise. Personal awareness is like a buffer that allows you to respond to emotions in a more measured and constructive way, which in turn, fosters emotional regulation and resilience – a catalyst in personal development.

From Thought to Manifestation

“Every thing and institution we see around us, created by human agency, had first to exist as a thought in some human mind. The things and conditions we desire to become realities we must first create in thought.”

Charles F. Haanel

Consider the world we live in—the buildings, technology, art, and societal structures. Each of these entities had its inception in someone’s mind as a thought, an idea, or a vision. Before a skyscraper touched the sky, it existed as an architectural concept in an engineer’s mind. Before a novel graced bookshelves, it was a collection of thoughts in an author’s imagination. This realization speaks to the transformative power of thoughts in bringing forth tangible creations.

Throughout history, some of the most revolutionary inventions and innovations began as mere thoughts in the minds of inventors and visionaries. The wheel, the printing press, the internet—all these groundbreaking concepts originated as thoughts before becoming integral parts of our physical reality. This demonstrates how intentional thinking has the potential to shape not only our personal surroundings but the course of human history.

Beyond physical creations, our cultural norms, societal structures, and shared beliefs also find their roots in collective thoughts. Systems of governance, social movements, and cultural norms are all manifestations of intentional thinking. By collectively agreeing upon certain ideas, societies shape their reality and establish frameworks that govern behavior and relationships.

On an individual level, intentional thinking plays a pivotal role in personal growth and development. The goals we set, the aspirations we harbor, and the visions we have for our lives all originate as thoughts. By intentionally cultivating positive, growth-oriented thoughts, we can shape our reality by aligning our actions with our aspirations.

In essence, the ability to shape our reality through intentional thinking is a testament to the creative and transformative potential of the human mind. By recognizing the power of our thoughts and intentionally directing them toward positive and constructive ends, we not only influence our immediate surroundings but also contribute to the broader tapestry of human experience. This awareness invites us to be intentional architects of our reality, creating a world that aligns with our aspirations and values.

Collective Thought

Consider the current global climate. Would you agree that we are upon a great ferment of unrest due to war? While this observation holds merit, it isn’t the central focus here. Haanel delves into the idea that wars typically stem from either an economic collapse caused by misguided thinking, a lack of thoughtful consideration, or a delay in applying correct thought. Before encountering this passage, I must admit, that hadn’t fully contemplated the impact of collective thought on the climate of war.

So let’s ponder:

  • What does our external reality reveal about our collective thought life?
  • Can we see an accurate reflection of our mental state in the world around us?
  • Consider current conflict zones globally—Congo, Ukraine, Russia, Israel, Palestine. What kinds of erroneous thinking might be at play in these situations?
  • As a collective, what actions could we take to reshape the prevailing narrative?

To me, it is almost unbelievable that the world’s yearning isn’t directed toward an economic or social revolution, as this is typically considered the go-to remedy for societal unrest. I think it might be worthwhile to pause and consider the possibility that indeed, what we truly need, and what we’re authentically yearning for, is a swift realignment of power. That maybe it’s not about the overthrow or fusion of nations or classes; but rather, about achieving a harmonious and timely social evolution so that the standards of life seamlessly correspond to the emerging needs and expectations of all.
