Finding Balance Through Equanimity: A Lesson from the Bhagavad Gita

As the seasons shift and we step into the rhythm of September, many of us seek to bring a sense of balance back into our lives. The long summer days filled with activity and sunlight begin to give way to cooler, quieter moments—a natural invitation to turn inward and reflect. In this time of transition, we can find guidance from the timeless teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, particularly the profound lesson of equanimity as the essence of yoga.

In Chapter 2, Verse 48 of the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna imparts a teaching that is both simple and deeply transformative:

“Be evenminded in both success and failure.”

This teaching, as explained by Paramhansa Yogananda in The Essence of The Bhagavad Gita, is a call to maintain balance and inner calm, regardless of the external circumstances we face. Whether we are celebrating our victories or navigating through challenges, the Gita reminds us that true peace comes from within—from our ability to stay centered and unshaken by the ups and downs of life.

But what does it mean to be evenminded? In a world that often measures our worth by our achievements, it’s easy to get caught up in the highs of success and the lows of perceived failure. Equanimity asks us to step away from this duality. It invites us to detach from the outcomes of our actions and focus instead on the quality of our efforts. When we perform our duties with a calm and balanced mind, free from the grip of attachment, we align ourselves with the deeper flow of life.

Yogananda describes this state of balance as the true meaning of yoga—”Yoga is balance,” he says. It is not just about physical postures or breath control, but about the steadiness of the mind and heart. When we cultivate equanimity, we create space within ourselves to experience the fullness of life without being swayed by its fleeting moments. We learn to embrace success without pride and face challenges without despair.

As we move through September, let this teaching of equanimity guide us. Whether in our work, relationships, or personal growth, may we find balance by nurturing a mindset of inner peace and stability. By being evenminded in all that we do, we align ourselves with the true essence of yoga and unlock the key to lasting inner balance.
