Discover one of Miami’s photographic gems!
Miami, a city known for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and dynamic energy, boasts a treasure that transcends time and offers a unique blend of history and elegance. Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, a gem nestled along Biscayne Bay, stands as a beacon for photography enthusiasts seeking a captivating blend of old-world charm and natural beauty.
About the Property
The Vizcaya estate sits on land originally owned by Mary Brickell, a pioneering figure in Miami’s early development, and the namesake for popular Miami landmarks like Mary Brickell Village and Brickell City Centre. In 1916, industrialist James Deering, a successful businessman and philanthropist, acquired this parcel of land. Deering’s vision was to create a palatial retreat that blended European grandeur with Miami’s tropical beauty, and so, he enlisted the expertise of renowned architect Paul Chalfin to bring his vision to life.
Landscape architect Diego Suarez was entrusted with the creation of Vizcaya’s enchanting gardens. The expansive grounds feature a variety of garden styles, including:
- The Secret Garden
- The Italian Garden, and
- The Maze Garden
What You’ll Enjoy
Caribbean Coral Rock Structures
The structures at Vizcaya are truly unique! The Main House is primarily constructed using coral rock, a local material also known as oolite or Miami limestone. Caribbean Coral Rock is a sedimentary rock formed from the accumulated remains of marine organisms like corals, shells, and algae.
I first learned about the material while watching The Black Miami documentary, a film that briefly sheds light on how early Black settlers incorporated coral rock into their construction practices, a tradition deeply rooted in their Caribbean heritage. The use of this coral rock is a distinctive, tell-tale feature of Miami architecture to this day, and reflects both the resourcefulness and cultural pride of those who settled in Miami from the Bahamas and beyond.
Vizcaya displays a wide range of indigenous materials as architectural masterpieces that transcend time.

The Italian Garden
The Italian Garden, with its captivating symmetrical design, is a nod to Renaissance aesthetics. Lush greenery, serene reflecting pools, and classical sculptures create an atmosphere of timeless elegance, and offers photographers a structured and balanced backdrop that complements a variety of compositions.

Photography Tips: Making the Most of the Italian Garden
- Golden Hour Magic: Schedule your visit during the golden hours—early morning or late afternoon—to capture the Italian Garden bathed in soft, enchanting light.
- Naviate the Gardens with Intention: Plan your route with intention, considering the different garden styles, sculptures, and water features. Allow yourself to wander and discover hidden corners, but also have a plan to ensure you capture the diverse elements of the landscape.
- Leverage Seasonal Changes: Visit during different seasons to capture the vibrant blooms of spring, the lush greenery of summer, or the earthy tones of fall. Each season brings a unique character to the estate, providing fresh opportunities for captivating photographs.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens is a delight for the entire family! Spanning approximately 50 acres, Vizcaya is a vast and diverse destination for those seeking to escape the urban hustle to immerse themselves in a world of refined beauty. The museum offers guided tours that provide insightful narratives, and shed light on the history and stories embedded in the Main House. Don’t forget to take a leisurely stroll along the baywalk, where the gentle lapping of waves and the rustling leaves create a serene ambiance. You can also check their calendar for workshops, lectures, and events that cater to diverse interests. From art exhibitions to botanical demonstrations, Vizcaya offers enriching experiences that deepen your understanding of the estate’s historical and cultural significance.
And remember, Vizcaya’s roots run deep into history. Long before the grand estate graced the shoreline, the Tequesta and Calusa Native American tribes thrived in harmony with the lush landscapes that now frame Vizcaya’s ornate gardens.
As you wander through the meticulously landscaped gardens, consider the layers of history that blanket this picturesque location. The very ground you walk upon, while there, holds echoes of a time when Native American communities cherished and cultivated the land, and though the estate itself doesn’t directly showcase this history, acknowledging and respecting the heritage of the region adds depth to the experience.
