Girl! We know maintaining healthy, natural hair is challenging, especially when you’re mom-ing, wife-ing, schooling, working, or just plain ol’ heat styling. One fantastic way to revitalize and strengthen your hair is by treating it with a DIY protein treatment.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a nourishing and revitalizing hair mask using natural ingredients like eggs, mayonnaise, avocados, honey, rosemary, and bananas. These ingredients are packed with essential nutrients that can help repair and fortify your hair, leaving it looking its best.

Ingredients

  • Eggs: Eggs are rich in protein, essential for hair growth and repair.
  • Mayonnaise: Mayonnaise contains oils and fats that moisturize and nourish the hair.
  • Avocados: Avocados are loaded with healthy fats and vitamins, providing deep hydration and strength.
  • Honey: Honey is a natural humectant that helps lock in moisture and adds shine to your hair.
  • Rosemary: Rosemary essential oil stimulates hair growth and improves hair thickness.
  • Bananas: Bananas are rich in vitamins and minerals that promote hair elasticity and strength.

BEFORE BEGINNING

We suggest that you perform your protein treatment on a cleansed and conditioned scalp + hair. One of the primary reasons for cleansing your hair before a protein treatment is to eliminate product buildup, dirt, and excess oils. Over time, these residues can accumulate on your scalp and hair, creating a barrier that prevents the treatment from penetrating effectively. Cleansing your hair prepares a clean canvas for the protein treatment, allowing it to work its magic more efficiently.

If your hair is in severe condition, we suggest performing a steam treatment using Aloe Vera Juice and Rosemary Water on your hair BEFORE applying the DIY protein treatment. Why?

  • Deep Hydration and Moisture: Aloe vera juice is a natural humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture. When applied to your hair and combined with rosemary water, it infuses the hair shaft with hydration, ensuring it remains soft, supple, and resistant to further damage. This deep hydration is essential for hair that’s become brittle and lackluster.
  • Improved Absorption of Protein Treatment: Steam treatments with aloe vera juice and rosemary water opens up the hair cuticles, allowing the protein treatment to penetrate more deeply. This not only ensures better absorption of the treatment but also maximizes its impact.
  • Scalp Nourishment: Rosemary water, which is infused with the aromatic herb’s essential oils, can promote hair growth and improve scalp health. When used during a steam treatment, it stimulates blood circulation, ensuring that your hair follicles receive the nutrients they need for optimal growth.
  • Soothing the Scalp: Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties and can soothe a sensitive scalp, providing relief from any discomfort or itching. This gentle care can help create a more favorable environment for hair growth.

STEAMING HAIR

Step 1: Bring distilled or spring water to a boil on the stove with a few sprigs of rosemary.

Step 2: Once rosemary as boiled for 1-2 minutes, reduce heat to low and allow to step for an additional 5-7 minutes.

Step 3: The water should now have a yellow or brownish tint. If it does, turn off stove and remove from heat. If it doesn’t, allow to steep for 3-5 extra minutes.

Step 4: Remove sprigs from water and carefully pour the water up to the half line of your hair steamer.

Step 5: Grab your Aloe Vera Juice and carefully pour up to the 3/4 line of your hair steamer.

Step 6: Use any additional distilled or spring water and add it up to the max line of your hair steamer.

Step 7: Turn on your hair steamer, position your hair (without a shower cap, but pinned if your hair is long) under the dome of the steamer until water is completely evaporated.

Step 8: Move on to the protein treatment.

Coconut milk and soy milk are vegan protein options for hair and leave hair healthy and soft. Yogurt is also an option if you’re not looking for vegan protein treatments.
